Bill of Materials
On the latest ERPNext, the Bill of Materials (BOM) is an important master document utilized to detail the entire make-up of a manufactured product. It comprises all the raw materials, sub-assemblies, operations, and quantities needed to manufacture a finished product, and acts as the basis of production, costing, and inventory planning activities.
The process of creating the BOM begins by defining the Item to be produced and specifying all components, raw materials as well as semi-finished goods. Every component is assigned a certain quantity, and optional routing information like Operations, Workstations, and estimated time can be specified. The BOM accommodates both Single-Level and Multi-Level (nested) structures, enabling other BOMs to be included as sub-assemblies.
Once the BOM has been built and submitted, it acts as a master reference for:
- Work Order creation: Automatically pulled into the Work Orders to establish materials and operations needed to make.
- Material Requirement Planning (MRP): The BOM is used in calculating raw material demand from forecasted production or sales orders.
- Stock Reconciliation: Facilitates material availability through warehouse-level tracking.
- Costing: The BOM estimates the Estimated Cost of production depending on the cost of raw materials, operations, and overheads.
In ERPNext, it is possible to hold multiple BOMs for the same item, identify one as default, and even keep revision history with BOM versions so that traceability and change control in manufacturing is kept alive.
